Christmas is my favorite time to play Classical Guitar. The instrument has such potential for expressing both the joy and reflection associated with this season.

Renaissance music always brings to my mind and heart the spirit of the holidays. Renaissance pieces on this CD include What Child Is This (Green Sleeves), Ballet, Luis Milan’s Pavan #1, The Night Watch, the German Dance Alman, Vaghe belleze et bionde treccie d’oro vdei che per ti moro, Bianco fiore, Danze, Gagliarda, Branle Gay, Se iom’accorgo and Saltarello. These pieces bring from the past ages the spirit of celebration. Some are lively dances, others are more melancholy. But either way it is such a joy to play them - each and every one.

Bach’s Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring is one of his best known works. It plays so naturally on the guitar it feels as though Bach composed it with the modern 6 string in mind. A simpler version of this piece was in my “beginning” Classical Guitar method book. From then until now I have always delighted in the natural flow of this piece.

Two “modern” pieces on this CD are Carol Of the Bells and White Christmas. I have taken liberty with Carol of the Bells making parts of it a samba and also including in the arrangement God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen. This is a song that arranged itself - my guitar actually took over the recording session! This is the only piece that has multiple guitars playing at once- overdubbed in the studio. The resulting piece is a lot of fun to listen to and was great fun to play. I hope you enjoy the variation on this well-known Ukrainian Christmas Carol. White Christmas is a standard and another of my favorite songs of Christmas. It sounds beautiful on nylon strings.
